Communications & Social Media Trainee - 52 week contract

 

Location:  Must be located in the GTA  Full-time, contract  

Job Status:   Full-time, 1 year contract

Compensation:    $22/hour  

Anticipated Start:  April 1st, 2026

The Indigenous Professional Association of Canada is dedicated to advancing Indigenous

leadership in the private, public and social sectors. IPAC serves its members through professional skill building, network development and the recognition of excellence. 

 

As part of the IPAC team, the Communications & Social Media Assistant supports day-to-day communications and marketing initiatives and the overall advancement of the communications and marketing strategy. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Communications & Social Media Assistant will gain hands-on experience supporting initiatives that will keep IPAC moving forward, with a focus on membership growth, and broad community engagement. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

General

  • Perform administrative functions such as processing membership applications, job postings, payment processing, and email communications.
  • Assist with IPAC’s email marketing program (newsletter and emails), including: copywriting, graphic design, and project management
  • Assist with email list management in Mailchimp. Monitor open and click-through rates, optimizing email campaigns as needed.
  • Join in partner meetings to ensure sponsorship agreement requirements for web/newsletters/events/job postings are met
  • Assist with any event planning that may be required

Digital Content Creation & Social Media Support

    • Collaborate to create engaging content for various marketing channels.
  • Assist with graphic design tasks such as creating visuals for social media, website, events, and email campaigns.
  • Review IPAC’s library of videos and create short vertical videos that can be used on social media platforms.
  • Assist in the implementation of IPAC’s social content calendar across platforms, including but not limited to content ideation (both internally and externally), drafting content, and scheduling posts.
  • Review website content to ensure it’s up to date and reflect relevant activities and events 
  • Produce engaging website content in support of charity marketing initiatives, writing copy and sourcing imagery including Recognizing Excellence interviews and features

 

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills is considered at strong asset.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and to handle changing priorities.
  • Strong computer knowledge including the following programs/applications: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Dropbox, WordPress, and Adobe Acrobat.  
  • Professionalism, tact and discretion. 
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated capacity to develop and implement practical strategies, plans, and solutions to identified issues and problems and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Proven ability to assimilate information gathered through research.
  • Developed critical thinking skills, including the capacity to identify and appropriately assess and order competing interests and priorities. 
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Implement and improve existing strategies

 

Education and Experience:

  • Must be registered with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training (note: registration can be completed during the application/interview process)
  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in marketing / communications or experience in a marketing / communications position is considered an asset 
  • Strong organizational/time management skills with an ability to manage multiple demands, meet deadlines, and take initiative 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a collaborative working style.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and communities is preferred and knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions is preferred Demonstrated ability to gather, synthesize, evaluate, and interpret information from diverse sources. 
  • Familiarity with social media platforms: LinkedIn, MailChimp, Facebook, Instagram and website updates in WordPress
  • Good judgment, discretion, tact and the ability to work easily with senior leaders within the charitable, government, and business sectors.
