JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties: 

  • Act as BC Hydro’s primary representative with First Nations. 
  • Independently and proactively design and deliver highly functioning relationships with First Nations. 
  • *Lead negotiation and/or implementation of agreements. 
  • Through complex projects and initiatives, this role will navigate high impacts on project footprint, land access, Indigenous culture and heritage, environment, regulatory, supporting First Nations social and economic interests. 
  • Manages multiple high risk, high impact complex projects, programs and operations with cross- organizational scope. 
  • Leads relationships with First Nations to foster collaboration and advance reconciliation. 
  • Partners with departments across the company to effectively frame issues and develop solutions to business priorities ensuring the integration of BC Hydro’s Indigenous Relations strategy into the broader business. 
  • Independently manages multiple internal and external competing priorities in a manner that achieves desired outcomes. 
  • Undertakes a practiced approach to the work that builds knowledge not only into the business unit but the broader company through the effective sharing of information and auditable record- keeping. 
  • Proactively designs and presents creative, effective recommendations to highly complex, undefined, critical and broadscope problems for senior leaders that often fall outside of established parameters. 
  • Provides strategic advice to the Indigenous Relations Leadership Team and senior leaders across the company. 
  • Develops briefing materials and presentations for influential internal and external audiences. 
  • Independently leading real-time issue resolution both internally with multiple business groups and with First Nations to ensure the company is achieving its desired goals. 
  • Actively advances BC Hydro’s First Nation relationship building strategy, including the company’s commitment to implementing the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations, through knowledge transfer and facilitating relation-building with First Nations. 
  • As a senior member of the Indigenous Relations team, this position actively supports the growth of competencies in the area of reconciliation with First Nations within the Indigenous Relations team, across the company and BC Hydro’s contractors.

Qualifications: 

  • University undergraduate degree or a related discipline in combination with relatable experience and education. University 
  • Post Graduate Degree (Master’s) is a strong asset. Education in Public Administration, economic development, law, anthropology, Indigenous Studies or related discipline or equivalent. 
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience managing multiple programs or projects, preferably involving engagement with Indigenous communities. Specific experience leading consultation related to Indigenous rights in a business or major project environment is an asset. 
  • Subject matter expertise in the area of First Nation relationship-building, consultation and engagement, negotiations and agreement implementation is required. 
  • Experience working independently and proactively and achieving desired business results is required. 
  • Experience working within a large resource-based organization and within the energy sector is an asset but not required. 
  • Demonstrated ability to drive results through others by developing and managing alliances and partnerships with a variety of internal and external parties including influencing functional leadership is required. 
  • Strong oral and written communications are needed for this role with a preference for experience in delivering presentations and leading discussions with senior professionals. 

Additional info: 

  • This role will involve occasional to frequent travel within BC including to remote communities. 
  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain a Class 5 Driver's License in good standing. 

Note: 

  • While this position is listed as being based at our Dunsmuir (Vancouver) office in Vancouver, we may consider having the position based out of a BC Hydro area office in the Southeast or North, subject to space availability. 
  • Please note this bulletin is a Full Time Temporary (FTT) opportunity for approximately 3 years.

Flexible work model role definitions

Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time. 

IBEW/Field – No option to work from home 

Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office. 

Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week. 

Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
