Description

Carleton University is seeking an innovative, inclusive, collaborative leader as its next Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Situated on unceded Algonquin territory and bordered by the Rideau River and historic Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Carleton University is just minutes from the heart of our nation's government and G-7 organizations, providing opportunities for staff and faculty to make a positive impact in our community and around the world.

As one of the 2023 Top 100 Employers in Canada and a Top 25 employer in the National Capital Region for nine consecutive years, Carleton University is one of Canada’s most resourceful and productive hubs of learning and research, fuelling a rich talent pipeline that is supporting social and economic renewal. The university’s smart, caring and connected community inspires and empowers individuals to become change leaders who drive impact in the world while challenging conventional modes of thinking and doing.

The University’s Strategic Integrated Plan 2020-2025, Share. Serve. Strive. lays out an ambitious vision for the future, anchored in Carleton’s strengths and student-centric, community-engaged values.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is a member of Carleton’s senior administration and is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership of a talented, broad and diverse group of Faculty and staff. This is an exciting time for the new Dean to lead FASS, and promote excellence in teaching and research as well as advancing academic innovation and cross-disciplinary initiatives, leveraging unique assets like the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (https://carleton.ca/cdcc/) and the Carleton University Art Gallery (https://cuag.ca/). The new Dean will be an accomplished teacher, administrator and researcher, an exceptional communicator, and an enthusiastic promoter of the value of education in the arts and social sciences within Carleton University and beyond. Additionally, the Dean will be supported by, and work closely with, four Associate Deans (Faculty Affairs; Academic; Student Affairs and Enrolment; Research and International). An experienced administrator, you will foster a collegial environment and will be a confident contributor to the University’s senior leadership. Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, you will contribute to the development of the Faculty’s academic programs, teaching and research, promoting a student-centred approach, teamwork and engagement across departments.

As the ideal candidate you will be an accomplished and collaborative academic and a dynamic leader with a record of building strong teams, promoting and supporting research, fostering academic innovation, managing budgets and resources, and advancing multi-disciplinary initiatives. Extensive or emerging experience as an academic leader will enable the new Dean to relate to a range of internal and external partners and promote excellence, equity, diversity, and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students as well as support decolonization goals of the university. The new Dean will possess an open and collegial style, outstanding management, communication and interpersonal skills, a creative approach to problem solving, a record of scholarly excellence, and a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in research and teaching.
