Sport Management – Assistant Professor – Tenure-stream appointment

 We at Bishop’s University, located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Abenaki people, and the Department of Sports Studies, invite applications for a tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in one of the following fields related to sport management: event management or legacy; digital media or technology; leadership or governance; communications; strategic management; sustainability; or other related fields. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2024.

The Position and our Department

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s Business and Society Concentration, including preparing Sports Studies students to enter a dynamic professional field by contributing to our growing focus on experiential learning and partnerships on and off- campus. In addition to maintaining a productive research program, the successful candidate will be expected to teach and introduce new courses, such as: sport event management, sports centre management and recreation planning, sport and social media, and/or other courses in the candidate’s area of interest and expertise. The individual must demonstrate a commitment to Bishop’s liberal education model and to applying principles and practices of equity, diversity, and inclusion in their teaching practices and curriculum choices. The successful candidate will also possess a research profile including publications or other relevant output, the capacity to attract external funding, and a completed Ph.D. (at the time of appointment) in a relevant discipline. Lived or professional experience working with marginalized, equity-seeking groups, cultures, and communities, and the ability to bring an anti-racist and/or decolonizing lens to teaching, learning, and assessment would be considered an asset. Candidates are also encouraged to provide any relevant information about their career experience and/or career interruptions. Since the primary language of instruction at Bishop’s University is English, applicants must be proficient in this language.

Bishop’s University is a public and secular institution offering undergraduate and graduate courses. Founded in 2009, the Department of Sports Studies is one of the fastest-growing departments at Bishop's, with an undergraduate student body of 250 Majors and 30 Minors spread across three concentrations: Athletic Development, Business and Society, and Health and Exercise. In addition, the Department recently instituted an Honours program to offer interested students a comprehensive introduction to the research process by involving them in all the steps of a research project under the supervision of faculty members. The Department has four tenure-stream faculty members and several contract faculty members, and it operates a Sports Studies Collaboratory research space in the Bishop’s University Sports Centre (i.e., Sports Laboratory). Our class size ranges from 10 to 130 students, thus making our academic spaces ideal to train the next generation of leaders in sport in Canada.
